The CEO of Wells Rural Electric Co. (WREC) is seeking a competent and enthusiastic professional for the position of Director, Engineering & Operations (DE&O). The current DE&O will retire the spring of 2021. WREC has retained NRECA’s Executive Search Team to facilitate the search process.
Wells Rural Electric Co. (www.wrec.coop) is a member-owned electric distribution utility headquartered in Wells Nevada. The Cooperative is located in the northeast corner of the state serving 6,250 electric consumers in Elko, Eureka, and Tooele (UT) counties. WREC provides service to its members via 1,417 miles of distribution and transmission lines located throughout a service area covering 10,552 square miles. In addition to its headquarters, the cooperative has service centers in Carlin and Wendover. WREC currently employs a staff of 38 professionals. The cooperative is financially sound, with annual revenue of $33.5 million. Total Utility Plant is $80.6 million with Equity at 55%. WREC receives wholesale power from the Bonneville Power Administration and is a member of the Nevada Rural Electric Association. WREC has an excellent reputation with its members and the community because of its history of innovation and commitment to offering needed programs and services.
The Director of Engineering & Operations is responsible for all activities related to engineering, operations, and power supply. The successful candidate will be a person of high integrity, demonstrate excellent people and communication skills, have proven leadership ability, and a strong commitment to “Cooperative Principles.” Other important experience and knowledge will include such competencies as workplace safety, strategic planning, and team building. Candidates are required to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering in addition to a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. A Professional Engineer license is preferred. Candidates must have at least five (5) years of leadership experience in a senior management position; or an equivalent combination and education. It is desirable that candidates have an interest to advance within WREC and be considered in the cooperative’s succession planning.
Wells Nevada is small rural community (population 1,550) strategically located at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and US 93. It is a community that offers an excellent quality of life and abundance of recreational opportunities. Surrounding communities include Elko located 45 miles west via I-80, and Salt Lake City 180 miles to the east via I-80. Commercial air service is available at Elko Regional Airport (EKO) with daily connections through Salt Lake City. Wells is located in what is considered the western high desert, but is also surrounded by a number of mountain ranges; including the Ruby and Humboldt Mountains, each exceeding an elevation of 11,000 feet. Immediately south of Wells is the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the largest national forest in the lower 48 states, offering year-round recreation of all types. The area offers a casual lifestyle with all the social and technological amenities of a much larger community. The Wells Combined – Elko County School District has a High School and Elementary/Jr. High School in Wells. The schools are rated highly by patrons because of the favorable student-teacher ratio and a graduation rate of 97%. Medical and health care services are available through Wells Medical Clinic and Northeast Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko.
